Permanent make-up and microblading rest on the same basic principle as tattooing, but the supplies diverge sharply: finer needles, shorter stroke, different pigment chemistry. This guide walks through what you need, based on our permanent make-up supplies range.

Machine or pen?

There are two methods, and each takes different equipment.

Digital PMU machines are motor-driven and let you control needle depth and speed. They cover brows, eyeliner and lips alike. See PMU machines.

Microblading pens are manual: a blade-shaped needle draws individual hair strokes. They remain widely preferred for natural-looking brow work. Find them under microblading pens.

Choosing needles

PMU needles are finer than tattoo needles and usually come in snap-on or cartridge form.

1RL, 3RL: fine hair strokes and eyeliner
5RL: heavier lines and lip contour
3F, 5F (flat): lip fill and shading
5SF / shader: powder brows and soft gradients

Options are in PMU needles. Microblading additionally needs microblading blades, numbered by U-shape, curved or straight configuration.

Pigments

PMU pigments are formulated differently from tattoo ink: they fade more softly under the skin and are less prone to unwanted colour shift over time. Warm-cool undertone balance matters for brows, and matching skin tone is critical for lips. Browse pigment options under permanent make-up supplies.

Measuring and mapping

Half the work in PMU is done before the needle touches skin. A brow started without proper symmetry will not be rescued by good materials. For calipers, mapping string, brow pencils and stencils, see measuring and mapping.

Consumables

Tips, pigment rings, disposable caps and covers are in PMU tips and supplies. Gloves, barriers and disinfection come from the shared supplies and hygiene range — the hygiene standard in PMU is identical to tattooing.
