Piercing runs on a different toolset from tattooing. The right needle gauge, forceps suited to the site and jewelry that meets body-jewelry standards decide both how clean the procedure is and how long healing takes. This guide summarises how to work through our piercing supplies range.

Needles and gauges

Piercing needles are sized in gauge (G) — the smaller the number, the thicker the needle.

  • 18G (1.0 mm): earlobe, nostril
  • 16G (1.2 mm): cartilage, eyebrow, navel
  • 14G (1.6 mm): septum, tongue, nipple
  • 12G and below: stretching and specialist work

Cannula needles let the jewelry follow the needle through in one movement, reducing tissue trauma. See piercing needles and cannulas.

Types of forceps

Forceps hold the tissue so the needle enters at the planned angle. A wrong angle is the most common cause of a piercing that will not heal or that migrates.

  • Slotted round jaw: general purpose, cartilage and eyebrow
  • Triangular jaw: septum and tight sites
  • Oval / Pennington: navel and lip

Models are in piercing forceps.

Dermal punches and dermal work

Dermal anchors use a punch instead of a needle, removing a small cylinder of tissue so the base can seat. This is advanced work and must follow local regulation. Tools are in dermal punches and tools, and bases in dermal anchors.

Why jewelry material matters

The first piece of jewelry stays in contact with the tissue for the whole healing period, so material quality comes before aesthetics:

  • Implant grade titanium: nickel-free, lowest risk of reaction — the first choice for fresh piercings.
  • 316L surgical steel: common and economical, but unsuitable for anyone with nickel sensitivity.
  • Bioplast / PTFE: flexible, preferred on mobile sites and for navel piercings during pregnancy.

For jewelry by site, see ear, nose and septum, lip and tunnels and plugs.

Hygiene and aftercare

Barriers, gloves and sharps handling follow exactly the same standard as tattooing. Clients should leave with a saline solution and written aftercare instructions — see piercing supplies.
