Cartridges have spread quickly over the last decade, yet bar needles remain a staple in many studios. The choice comes down to style, machine and budget. Here is a four-point comparison of cartridge tattoo needles and traditional bar needles.

1. Speed and workflow

This is where cartridges clearly win. Changing a needle means pulling one cartridge and clicking in the next — no stripping the machine, no cleaning a grip, no fitting a new tube. Over a long session with frequent configuration changes, that adds up.

With bar needles every change is also a tube and grip change. For an artist who stays on one configuration for hours, however, the difference barely registers.

2. Hygiene

Cartridges arrive single-use, sterile and membraned. The membrane stops ink flowing back into the machine, reducing cross-contamination risk. To match that with bar needles you need sterile disposable grips and tubes, or a properly run autoclave cycle.

Run correctly, both systems are safe — the difference is how much process you carry. Disposable sterile grips and tips are a middle path that cuts most of that workload.

3. Cost

Per unit, bar needles are far cheaper, especially bought in boxes of 50. But judging on needle price alone is misleading: cartridges carry no separate grip or tube cost, no sterilisation time and no autoclave consumables.

A practical approach is to buy your two or three highest-turnover configurations as bar needles by the box, and keep occasional configurations as cartridges by the piece.

4. Machine compatibility

Cartridges need a cartridge-compatible pen tattoo machine or a rotary with a cartridge grip. Coil machines traditionally run bar needles. If your bench is mostly coils, switching to cartridges is a machine investment, not just a needle change.
